This web page responds to the letter referenced in the FIT HITS THE SHAN section of the 1995 narrative of neighborhood events. The first sentence of the ninth paragraph of that letter states:
The "ON SEPTEMBER 26, 1995 YOU REPORTED A BURGLARY" lead in the ALLCAPS communication shown below is the cover-up. It ignores (by making no mention of) the fact that the burglary was actually reported within minutes of it happening on July 27th. Rather than admit that the two responding officers ignored that crime by not even submitting a written report about it, the command staff within MPD from the Chief down through the District #3 Captain to the two responding sergeants made it appear instead that the burglary and written report regarding it took place two months after the fact. Were they not in cover-up mode, the first sentence should have read:
The two sergeants came to the victim of the garage burglary and neglect by the responding officers on the 26th of September - two MONTHS AFTER the actual burglary on July 27th. They made the motions of an investigation in order to prepare a written report. The proof that they still weren't interested in the crime itself is that at no time did they (or anyone else investigating this burglary) want to discuss or get a copy of the notes made regarding the incident immediately after it happened. The whole process was one of paperwork and bureacracy - not crime prevention or resolution -- this all in spite of what it says in the ALLCAPS missive below about
It should be noted that while there was no written report prepared by the two officers who responded to the scene within an hour of the actual burglary, they did come around to the front door of the victim of the garage burglary two months later to voice their "respect" for citizen "letter writers" of his kind -- they obviously having been ordered to do so AFTER THE VICTIM'S LETTER TO THE MAYOR et al made the FIT HIT THE SHAN and motivated action (albeit a cover-up) within MPD.
